Last week, a Merlin was seen in the fields behind Place Farm (by Paul Stevens). A good sighting, and rather jealous-making as I’ve yet to see one in Firle.
Also notable in this area is a decent gathering of Fieldfares and Redwings (70+, according to Paul). Small groups have certainly been quite noticeable in recent weeks, calling as they commute over the centre of the village.
The Cattle Egret remains between Beddingham and Rodmell, and a small roost of what are probably Corn Buntings has been reported nearby along the Ouse.
Good to hear that this area still hosts some – during the winter that a Rough-legged Buzzard spent much of its time at Rodmell (2002-3), I saw a flock of perhaps 60 Corn Buntings along the track towards the Ouse.
