Not far from Firle…

A few reports of scarce raptors in the local vicinity over recent days, with a Hen Harrier seen close to the A27 at the Kingston roundabout , and Merlin reported on private land west of Lewes. (both per SOS site)

Haven’t heard of any Short-eared Owls at Rodmell yet this winter, but it’s surely worth a look now. A fairly substantial flock of Lapwings is quite often in the air over Lewes Brooks, viewable from the main road or the trainline. The Iford end of the brooks looks particularly well-flooded now.

There was also an intriguing report of Hawfinch a few days ago in Lewes (per BirdGuides). I’ve no details on this, but if verified this is a good local record.
