After years of toing and froing, there’s finally a public consultation on the future of the Lower Cuckmere.
The Environment Agency is proposing to remove flood defences and allow the lower valley to become a proper tidal estuary again. This will transform the look of the valley between Exceat Bridge and the Haven – not popular with everyone – but should make it agreat deal richer for wildlife, as well as reinstating much of the area as a functioning floodplain to protect areas further upstream.
The consultation is on until 10 December. Worth sticking your oar in while you still can.
