What was almost certainly a single male Teal on Glynde Reach, seen this evening for a split second from the train between the A27 and Glynde village, where the train track crosses the water.
Though fairly common in the winter across the Ouse and Glynde Levels, summering Teal are a local rarity. But in recent years, [...]

A beautiful evening, although the wind was starting to get up ahead of the showers that arrived overnight.
A bike-ride around Firle just before dusk failed to glean any Nightingales or Turtle Doves, but there was a group of around 20 Swallows down by the decoy pond (along with a large heron chick, on the [...]

A Great Grey Shrike at Glynde, seen first yesterday and again today, around 400m east of Glynde Bridge, in hawthorns next to the Reach. The first local record for – how long? Many years, perhaps?
Also, nearby on Glynde Levels, five White-fronted Geese and 30 Golden Plover seen today, by Alan Kitson and Miou Helps (via [...]

A walk with Paul up Glynde Reach, in the gloom of Saturday afternoon.
Apart from the clouds and the wind, the afternoon belonged to thrushes: at least ten Blackbirds in hawthorns by Glynde Station, and party after party of Redwings in the scrub along the Reach, vastly outnumbering the seven Fieldfares.
Apart from thrushes, passerines were fairly [...]

More good stuff at Glynde of late.
On Sunday, a Red Kite reported at Mount Caburn (Peter Coward, per SOS sightings). There have been been quite a few around in the last few days, including a remarkable flock of nine together over Northiam in the East of the county. Is the Caburn bird just [...]

A couple of Swifts at Glynde Reach today (seen by Matt Eade, per SOS website).
Are these the first seen in Sussex this year? Whatever, they’re at least a week earlier than expected in our local area.

Not a post on falconry, but about a ringtail Hen Harrier at Glynde Reach earlier this week.
The sighting by Robert Slater was made from the train as it passes through Beddingham – presumably over the wet, tussocky area adjacent to the Reach. I’ve seen one fly over the road a couple of years ago [...]
