With heavy rain until about 10 yesterday, I was late walking the dog, but it seemed to coincide with all the birds starting to get busy after their own delayed start.
Walking up Bostal Road, a gaggle of about 30 noisy Canada Geese – that included one noisy Greylag – flew off the Downs and over [...]

On Sunday afternoon, a couple of Little Owls showed at Place Farm in the dying light.
Today, flocks of five and 10 alba wagtails in the paddocks around Place Farm, with more overhead.
Groups of around 50 and 18 Canada Geese flew west towards the Ouse.

Back up to the Plantation again this morning, and one or more Marsh Tits again in evidence, this time with a mixed flock of LT, Blue and Great Tits and perhaps 10 Chiffchaffs, in scrub just to the east of the woodland.
In the plantation itself, Treecreeper singing and GS Woodpecker calling, while on the big [...]

Some images from Sunday’s Safari Britain walk – first the caterpillar of a Lime Hawk-moth, in the same place to one seen a few weeks ago (previously thought to have been Privet Hawk-moth).
Bird-wise, the walk was much quieter than the previous week; the highlight was probably a Common Buzzard that some of the group [...]

Five of us met at Place Farm on a lovely midsummer Saturday morning, for a walk up to Firle Plantation and back. Often on these occasions the really special birds decline to appear on cue – but this time we were in luck.
As we gathered, a subtle but distinctive squeaking song drifted over from the [...]

A Spotted Flycatcher seen by Paul S yesterday, on a roof and surrounding garden in the middle of The Street.
After the one heard singing in the churchyard last week, it bodes well for the prospects of a pair or two settling in the village to breed this year.

On Thursday morning, the first familiar squeaks from a Spotted Flycatcher, singing somewhere around in the mature trees near the back of the churchyard in Firle, but refusing to show itself.

A beautiful evening, although the wind was starting to get up ahead of the showers that arrived overnight.
A bike-ride around Firle just before dusk failed to glean any Nightingales or Turtle Doves, but there was a group of around 20 Swallows down by the decoy pond (along with a large heron chick, on the [...]

After the rubbbish summer, we deserved something. And that came this weekend, with a bout of spectacular early autumn weather that had the good grace to include birds in it.
The good stuff started on Saturday morning when Paul Stevens came running over to say that he had a probable Honey Buzzard over his garden. Unfortunately, [...]
