More than one in fact, but ‘geese’ doesn’t work in the rhyme. The Ouse valley, not renowned for major flocks of wildfowl, is currently host to a remarkable confluence of unusual geese.
At Piddinghoe for the last few days there have been a couple of Tundra Bean Geese, several White-fronted Geese and around a [...]

More on the Ouse

Yesterday, the long-staying Cattle Egret was reportedly still present east of the Ouse, opposite the track from Rodmell (TQ433069). Having pored over my Ordnance Survey map, I think this means it’s technically in Beddingham – a good ‘parish tick’ for bird geeks (such as, well, me).
Nearby, a Cetti’s Warbler called briefly from the reedbed a [...]

Last week, a Merlin was seen in the fields behind Place Farm (by Paul Stevens). A good sighting, and rather jealous-making as I’ve yet to see one in Firle.
Also notable in this area is a decent gathering of Fieldfares and Redwings (70+, according to Paul). Small groups have certainly been quite noticeable in recent weeks, [...]

The Cattle Egret apparently remains by the Ouse, and it’s interesting to see the number of other sightings from the area increase as the egret pulls in admirers.
Yesterday, a female Marsh Harrier was reported – the first local record I’ve heard of for some time – and the season’s first Short-eared Owl was reported the [...]
Borderline Cattle Egret

Ok, the identity of this bird isn’t, as far as I’m aware, in doubt – the ‘borderline’ refers to whether it’s sneaked into our home parishes of Beddingham, Glynde or Firle.
A Cattle Egret was first reported on Saturday, on the east side of the Ouse, viewed from Rodmell Brooks. Yesterday it was also seen just [...]

Some good finds in the local area of late (sadly, none of them mine…)
Two weeks ago, 3 Cattle Egrets on Lewes Brooks. Rare visitors, but the Ouse Valley now seems to be their favourite place to turn up in the UK.
Last week, a Honey Buzzard reported flying in a SE direction over Malling Down. Surely [...]
