After some unpromising evenings earlier in the week, Thursday evening was clear for the 20 or so guests of the Safari Britain camp.
As we arrived, the ongoing influx of Painted Ladies was still in evidence, and a few of the regular warblers (Whitethroat, Chiffchaff), Blackbirds and Robins sang around the campsite.

Red Kite over Firle

Paul had a Red Kite circling over Firle village at 12.25 on Thursday, before moving off west.

Saw my first Common Spotted Orchids of the year over the weekend, which reminded me to dig out photos of flowers seen last year.
Here’s a Pyramidal Orchid which was on the A27 roadside last June.

The amazing influx of Painted Ladies continued yesterday in Firle (and everywhere else by the sounds of it) with butterflies streaming through all day.

According to reports elsewhere in Sussex yesterday, a mass influx of Painted Lady butterflies is underway from the Continent.

It’s worth looking out for them anywhere, but particularly on the typical butterfly-friendly flowers such as buddleia.

Another kite?

A probable Red Kite drifted over Glynde at 08.25 this morning, heading for Caburn. Not quite close enough for identification with bleary eyes and no binoculars. Also, a Shelduck circling over the village.

Spotted again

A Spotted Flycatcher seen by Paul S yesterday, on a roof and surrounding garden in the middle of The Street.
After the one heard singing in the churchyard last week, it bodes well for the prospects of a pair or two settling in the village to breed this year.

On Thursday morning, the first familiar squeaks from a Spotted Flycatcher, singing somewhere around in the mature trees near the back of the churchyard in Firle, but refusing to show itself.

A 2-hour walk to hear warblers and look for Buzzards and woodpeckers. All welcome, meet at Place Farm, Firle at 8am.

A Little Egret flying west over the road at Crossways this morning – the first time I’ve seen one on the south side of the A27 in Firle, although apparently they do visit the Decoy Pond in Firle Park from time to time.
